Frequently Asked Questions

Is your church part of a larger organization?

At Heritage Church of Christ we are independent of any larger governing organization. We believe we are part of the church Jesus established. We recognize Him as the head of our church and we are members of it (see Ephesians 5:23-33). We simply do not accept any man made organization coming between our Savior and His family.

We believe the local body of believers should make decisions for itself with God’s Word as its guide. It is our belief that God structured the church to function independently with local leadership and oversight. The New Testament calls these leaders “elders”, “overseers” and “shepherds” (Acts 20:17, 18; Titus 1:5-7; 1 Peter 5:1, 2).

We do enjoy working closely with other local churches here and around the world. We share with them in many opportunities to show God’s compassion, praising God and carrying the healing message of the gospel to the suffering.

If I become part of your church will I need to know a guide book or rule book?

One of the most refreshing attributes of our faith is its simplicity. We hold the Bible as our only spiritual guide. We believe it is all we need to find a compassionate Father with outstretched arms inviting us into His family (2 Timothy 3:16; Psalms 119:105). The early Christians used it as their only guide to know the Father, gain His forgiveness, worship Him, and live a moral life.

It is our goal to imitate that simple and pure model of seeking and pleasing the Father. We do not impose any human standard of belief on our members.

We believe the Bible is God’s own message for us. Many useful books have been written over time but none holds the value to mankind that God’s own word does. Knowing God’s word is all God expects of us and all we expect of each other.

Tell me about your worship. It was different than I am used to.

Our aim is to keep our worship simple and pure. We are trying to replicate the worship of early Christians we read about in the New Testament. We don’t have to guess as to whether this was acceptable to God.

Their worship was uncomplicated. They sang songs of praise, shared their needs and cares with God by prayer, read His words in devotion and discussed its meaning for their lives. A very important part of their worship was the weekly observance of communion.

This simple form of worship brings us closer to the Father, lifts our spirits and joins our hearts together. It is an essential part of enriching our families.

When you visit us you will find everyone is encouraged to participate in our worship. Taking an active part in this time of sharing brings you closer to God and His family, it strengthens your daily devotion to Him and opens your heart to the Father’s guiding.

You emphasize your Bible classes. Why it so important to you?

At Heritage we are convinced that the help we need to navigate the difficult path of life is found in God’s Word.

We believe the Bible, God’s own words, gives us the way to reach the Father and secure His grace. It teaches us about Jesus, His life, love and great sacrifice securing our salvation. It tells us about the Spirit, His guidance in our lives and His help with our struggles.

In the Bible we find the wisdom to thrive in life, the power to overcome our own weaknesses and the hope of our future with the Father. You can tell – this book is precious to us. It is an indispensable tool in each our lives.

In our Bible classes we read and study the Bible. We have open, earnest discussion about its meaning. Because we believe it is our guide to the Father we want to know it. We want our children to grow up with a knowledge of it to better equip them for the challenges ahead of them.

We invite you to be a part of our weekly studies!

How do I become a part of your church?

This is another wonderfully simple part of our faith.

We believe God adds people to His church when they become Christians. We are just a group of those Christians who have chosen to worship and work together. If you have been added by God to His church and want to be a part of our family, let one of our leaders know.

The question really is “How and when does God make Christians and add them to His church?”

In the New Testament we find that God first did this on the day of Pentecost following the resurrection of Jesus (Acts 2). On that day Peter and the other Apostles first presented the good news of God’s salvation to a large crowd in Jerusalem. Those who believed that message asked “What must we do?” Peter’s response was simple and straight forward, “Repent and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus the Messiah for the forgiveness of sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” The result? “Those who accepted his message were baptized, and that day about 3000 people were added to them…And every day the Lord added to them those who were being saved.” (Acts 2:37, 38, 41, 47)

If you have been added to God’s church we welcome you to our family at Heritage.
